Better sustainable procedures for Vietnam tourism businesses

The Vietnam Tourism Association (VITA) members pledge to eliminate single use plastics and integrate plastic waste reduction policies by 2030.


Tourism is a significant contributor to implement sustainability and the commitment to achieve a plastic-free sector is on the table. One of the most reported considerations by visitors to Vietnam is the waste and plastic miss use in several locations.

Despite several campaigns in the past, little progress had been observed and destinations like Ha Long bay, Phu Quoc island or Nha Trang suffering waste serious consequences, even in locations like Hoi An or Ninh Binh province there were successful waste reduction programs.

Several priorities mentioned in the proposal are:

📌 Raising public and visitors awareness
📌 Developing green tourism products
📌 Mobilising international resources to advance waste reduction efforts
📌 Encourage companies to adopt more sustainable practices

International arrival figures in Vietnam first three quarters 2024

Tourism figures for first three quarters 2024 in Vietnam reached 12.7 million international arrivals (up 43 % from 2023). Breakdown data for reference: - Asia 10.12 million (S. Korea, mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, up 47.7% y-o-y) - Europe 1.4 million (up nearly 40% y-o-y) - Americas 736.600 (up 7.9% y-o-y) - Oceania 391.000 (up 25.8% y-o-y) - Africa 38.800 (up 90.7% y-o-y) Despite September numbers are lower than August (1.27 mill vs. 1.43 mill), full year should achieve the 17-18 million international arrivals forecasted.
